Background
Our kidney usually collects filtered fluids from the kidney that end up as urine.
Healthcare Nephrologist have classify renal tubular disorders into three main types. These types depend on what part of the renal tubule has a problem.
i. Distal tubular renal acidosis
dRTA is a rare type of kidney disease that can be inherited(primary dRTA) or caused by another disorder or medications (secondary dRTA). Renal refers to the kidney, distal tubular refers to a specific part of the kidney and are (far) and acidosis means that there are too much toxins in the kidney. Kidney functions to maintain balance of pH between the level of acid and base in the blood.Normally the average pH range is between 7.35 and 7.45. dRTA happens when the balance of acid is high.
ii. Proximal RTA (pRTA)
The closer (proximal) of the kidney tubules are prevented from being able to remove acid because of damage. Even though pRTA is rare, it mainly occurs from infancy or Alcohol consumption disorder.
iii. Hyperkalemic RTA
This when the problem is at the end part of the kidney. The tubules fail to remove potassium which eventually makes the kidney fail to remove acid. Hyperkalemic RTA is the most common and occurs to people with Diabetes or people under constant medication.
Methods
Each type of RTA treatment usually involves oral alkali therapy (sodium bicarbonate or sodium citrate). This therapy can increase your blood pH and make it more basic. This will
Relieve symptoms
Results
Results from blood test and urinalysis are the main routine tests to get to know the disorder of renal tubules . Initial blood work for RTA diagnosis will involve measuring electrolytes within the blood. This electrolytes are sodium, potassium and chloride. Test also measure blood pH to see if it's too high.Blood levels of potassium and carbon dioxide (types of acid) and bicarbonate (a type of base) are measured to help complete puzzle for your healthcare team to make a diagnosis.Additionally, imaging tests, such as X-rays, ultrasound and a CT scan are used.
Conclusion
Renal tubular acidosis is rare. But your chances of developing RTA increase if you Have a blockage and obstruction in your urinary system.
